George Burns smoked cigars every day and he lived to be over 100.

But here again, I'm playing the devil's advocate...

I know this will be off topic, but since you mentioned "devil's advocate" I just need to say something. At SS this last weekend, we had a guy who visited our class for the first time. One class member like's to say that all the time. Well this guy rip the guy up one side and down the other that we should never say that. So I thought that was interesting. Had never heard anyone being upset about people saying that. But I guess to each his own.

As far as George Burns is concerned, he lived to be a few months past his 100th birthday.

It's my understanding that the word advocate means to represent someone and/or his position. As adventists should we not be advocates for our Creator instead of bringing the devil into play??

As for the question of "does it bother you?" Anything that takes away from the respect my Heavenly Father deserves bothers me. But more importantly the question you might want to ask is 'was my comment offensive to my creator?'

This is a forum. I'm sorry if my playing the devil's advocate offends you. You might need to get used to it. And no, I do not believe God was offended by my comment, and it isn't up to you to tell me what questions I ought to be asking God. That's my personal business....not yours.

I am aware that this is a forum, thank you.

You need not apologize to me for how you choose to live your life. That is completely your choice...your choices, your consequences.

You suggest that I "might need to get used to it". This is not something I am willing to do. I follow my Creator's guiding Word and because I am very much aware of the fact we are in a spiritual war I will not "get used" to anything that detracts from His Truth.

I do not wish to upset you Pam, I am merely concerned that on a forum for Adventists the devil is making his way in here. As God's people we need to be diligent in our own behaviours to protect God's Name and His children. Don't forget the whole universe is watching us closely.

Blessings to you in the name of Jesus Christ.

It is up to everyone to play for whoever they feel they represent. He is a God of choices, accountability and reliability. That which u choose, He holds u accountable and liable for it. Play for whoever u want to, but make sure to choose wisely. I would not play for the Devil's side unless is a play or skit to pass a message of salvation, but not with my life.

Does anyone here know what "devil's advocate" means? Or are we just assuming that it literally means advocating the devil?

Anyway, back to the topic...

I guess I'll live for a hundred years too, because I don't smoke, eat meat, or drink alcohol! :D

Unless you think I should try the cigar approach... :\

Nice story, abelisle!

Yes, we are once again in the realm of the Humorless Literalists Society (Not to be confused with the Humorous Literalists Society that find's a great source of amusement in literalism...) that fails to understand metaphor, simile, idiom, venacular, colloquialism, figures of speech, symbolism, slang, euphemism, etc.

reyes

For the record, "devils advocate" is a figurative expression that "originally referred to a canon lawyer in the Roman Catholic Church appointed to argue against the canonization or beatification of a person." (Amusingly, this may well supply further fodder for those advocating against being the devil's advocate in Adventism...) Continuing onward and hopefully upward, "In common parlance, a devil's advocate is someone who takes a position he or she does not agree with for the sake of argument. This process can be used to test the quality of the original argument and identify weaknesses in its structure."

Look it Up Here

And Here

And for further edification -

Figure of Speech - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figures_of_speech

Thank you, Tom. I was just about to wax eloquent on the same explanation, because of the dialog which has ensued here in this thread. But thankfully, you did it first. And did it much better than I would have, I might add.

Personally ... I just don't feel that playing with the Devil is a very good idea.

It's not one of the sports that I would recommend.

Yep. It seems to have evolved into playing the Devil's advocate. I guess some still consider it sport though.

Maybe some of you are playing with the Devil? If so, you'd better watch out - I hear he's a very big sore loser.

Everyone on this site doesn't know the american jargon and the word "Devil's Advocate" may conjure up the wrong image.

I think coming on Club Adventist encourages devil's advocacy. I like to do it myself at times.

It just means taking an opposing side whether you actually hold that stand or not.
