Overall Question: What concerns you most about heaven?
Memory Text: John 14:2-3 NIV “2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”
Sunday – When do we get to heaven?
True Nature of Death:
1 Kings 11:21 NRSV “When Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his ancestors and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Let me depart, that I may go to my own country."”
Psalm 13:3 NRSV “Consider and answer me, O LORD my God! Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,”
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 NRSV “5 The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no more reward, and even the memory of them is lost. 6 Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished; never again will they have any share in all that happens under the sun.”
1 Corinthians 15:51 NRSV “Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed,”
1 Corinthians 15:51 COMMENTARY BY MATTHEW HENRY Death may seize a believer, but it cannot hold him in its power. How many springs of joy to the saints, and of thanksgiving to God, are opened by the death and resurrection, the sufferings and conquests of the Redeemer!
Entrance to Heaven:
John 14:1-3 God’s Word to the Nations “1 ¶ "Don’t be troubled. Believe in God, and believe in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms. If that were not true, would I have told you that I’m going to prepare a place for you? 3 If I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again. Then I will bring you into my presence so that you will be where I am.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 God’s Word to the Nations “13 ¶ Brothers and sisters, we don’t want you to be ignorant about those who have died. We don’t want you to grieve like other people who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and came back to life. We also believe that, through Jesus, God will bring back those who have died. They will come back with Jesus. 15 We are telling you what the Lord taught. We who are still alive when the Lord comes will not go into his kingdom ahead of those who have already died. 16 The Lord will come from heaven with a command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the dead who believed in Christ will come back to life. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive will be taken in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. In this way we will always be with the Lord. 18 So then, comfort each other with these words!”
Monday – Choice of Heaven or Hell
Matthew 25:46 Holman ““And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.””
Matthew 25:46 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY The word aiōnios, translated “everlasting,” or “eternal,” once, “for ever,” means literally, “lasting for an age,” in the sense of being continuous and not subject to capricious change. The ancient Greek papyri contain numerous examples of Roman emperors being described as aiōnios. The reference is to the continuous nature of their tenure—they held office for life.
John 5:29 Holman “and come out—those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgment.”
Revelation 21:1-4 KJ21 “1 ¶ And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no more sea. 2 And I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of Heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of Heaven, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them; and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away."”
Revelation 21:8 KJ21 “BUT THE FEARFUL, AND UNBELIEVING, AND THE ABOMINABLE, AND MURDERERS, AND WHOREMONGERS, AND SORCERERS, AND IDOLATERS, AND ALL LIARS, SHALL HAVE THEIR PART IN THE LAKE WHICH BURNETH WITH FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, WHICH IS THE SECOND DEATH."”
Tuesday – The Kingdom Now and Then
Luke 17:21 BBE “And men will not say, See, it is here! or, There! for the kingdom of God is among you.”
Luke 17:21 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES When an earthly prince visits different parts of his territories, he does it with pomp. His movements attract observation, and become the common topic of conversation. The inquiry is, Where is he? which way will he go? and it is a matter of important news to be able to say where he is. Jesus says that the Messiah would not come in that manner. It would not be with such pomp and public attention. It would be silent, obscure, and attracting comparatively little notice. Or the passage may have reference to the custom of the pretended Messiahs, who appeared in this manner. They said that in this place or in that, in this mountain or that desert, they would show signs that would convince the people that they were the Messiah.
John 14:27 BBE “May peace be with you; my peace I give to you: I give it not as the world gives. Let not your heart be troubled; let it be without fear.”
Romans 14:17 BBE “For the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”
Colossians 1:10-14 BBE “10 Living uprightly in the approval of the Lord, giving fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Full of strength in the measure of the great power of his glory, so that you may undergo all troubles with joy; 12 ¶ Giving praise to the Father who has given us a part in the heritage of the saints in light; 13 Who has made us free from the power of evil and given us a place in the kingdom of the Son of his love; 14 In whom we have our salvation, the forgiveness of sins:”
Colossians 1:10 COMMENTARY BY BARNES All good beings desire that others should understand their character, and God delights in those who are sincerely desirous of knowing what he is, and who inquire with humility and reverence into his counsels and his will. Men are often displeased when others attempt to look into their plans, for they are sensible they will not bear the light of investigation. God has no plans which would not be seen to be, in the highest degree, glorious to him.
Wednesday – Beyond Our Wildest Expectation
Matthew 22:23-30 CEV “23 ¶ The Sadducees did not believe that people would rise to life after death. So that same day some of the Sadducees came to Jesus and said: 24 Teacher, Moses wrote that if a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry the widow. Their first son would then be thought of as the son of the dead brother. 25 Once there were seven brothers who lived here. The first one married, but died without having any children. So his wife was left to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brothers and finally to all seven of them. 27 At last the woman died. 28 When God raises people from death, whose wife will this woman be? She had been married to all seven brothers. 29 Jesus answered: You are completely wrong! You don’t know what the Scriptures teach. And you don’t know anything about the power of God. 30 When God raises people to life, they won’t marry. They will be like the angels in heaven.”
No Longer in the New Earth:
Revelation 21:1 ESV “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.”
Revelation 21:1 COMMENTARY BY WILLIAM BURKITT And no more sea; that is say some, as it was before, turbulent, changeable, subject to corruption and vanity; say others, no more troublesome state of things, which is oft-times signified by the sea.
Revelation 21:4 ESV “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."”
Revelation 21:4 PEOPLE’S NT COMMENTARY No sorrow or travail of any kind shall ever enter within the walls of the city. The cry of anguish shall never be uttered, hearts shall never be broken, no tear shall ever dim the eye, and, most glorious of all, death shall be unknown. Death began his sway when man was expelled from Paradise; he ends it when the final judgment condemns Satan, death and hades to enter the lake of fire. The new Jerusalem will be painless, tearless, deathless, because it will be a sinless city. "The former things have passed away."
Revelation 21:22-27 ESV “22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day––and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
Revelation 22:5 ESV “And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”
Thursday – Meeting the Lord of Heaven
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NRSV “16 For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16 COMMENTARY GENEVA BIBLE NOTES The word which the apostle uses here, properly signifies that encouragement which mariners give to one another, when they altogether with one shout put forth their oars and row together.
Revelation 21:22-23 NRSV “22 I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
Dominant Aspect of Eternal Life:
Romans 14:11 NIV “It is written: "’As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’"”
Revelation 5:13 NIV “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"”
Revelation 5:13 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY Every creature. That is, every created being. The chorus swells, and in response to the cries of praise from the hosts of heaven, all creation joins in adoration of the Father and the Son. Christ is victor, and the character of God is vindicated before the whole universe.
