Welcome to CA cosmin, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself but I didn't see any books that you listed, or are in the process of listing them? I knew I spoke to soon, because just as I posted this I saw your list. :) sorry

Well do you have any books that you think we should not read? And thanks for welcoming me. I am a big fan of forums. I am registered on many. This is one of many.

I have to say I don't know much about twilight or spiderwick. I have seen Harry Potter. I believe that there are those that probably should not read certain books or even see certain movies. Having said that I believe that if you have a strong faith reading those books will not sway your beliefs. I remember many years ago the church said it was OK to watch disney movies. I think that those are just as bad in a sense as Harry Potter. When allowing my daughter to watch the disney movies I would explain to her that things in these movies were not true. Just like the christmas movies with santa claus, etc.

Well I used to like Harry Potter when I was in about 6th grade but since then my father gave me "the talk" and since then I have stopped and realized my mistake.

The following are summaries of the books I mention earlier...

Spiderwick
----------
upon moving into the run-down Spiderwick Estate with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves pulled into an alternate world full of faeries and other creatures. Unable to explain the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, the family blames it all on Jared. When he, Simon and Mallory investigate what's really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and of the creatures that inhabit it.

Twilight
----------

Bella Swan has always been a little bit different. Never one to run with the crowd, Bella never cared about fitting in with the trendy, plastic girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother remarried and Bella chooses to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she didn't expect much of anything to change. But things do change when she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. For Edward is nothing like any boy she's ever met. He's nothing like anyone she's ever met, period. He's intelligent and witty, and he seems to see straight into her soul. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance - unorthodox because Edward really isn't like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn't aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he's immortal. That's right - vampire. But he doesn't have fangs - that's just in the movies. And he doesn't drink human blood, though Edward and his family are unique among vampires in that lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. Somehow or other, they will have to manage their unmanageable love. But when unexpected visitors come to town and realize that there is a human among them Edward must fight to save Bella? A modern, visual, and visceral Romeo and Juliet story of the ultimate forbidden love affair - between vampire and mortal.

Isabella Swan moves to gloomy Forks to live with her father. As she starts her junior year in high school she becomes fascinated by Edward Cullen who holds a dark secret which is only known by his family. Edward falls in love with Bella as well but knows the further they progress in their relationship the more he is putting Bella and those close to her at risk. Edward warns Bella that she should leave him but she refuses to listen and to understand why he is saying this. Bella learns his secret. He is a vampire, however she is not afraid of his blood-thirsty needs and the fact he could kill her at any moment. Bella is afraid of losing him, the love of her life. The thrill begins when a new vampire finds it a challenge to hunt Bella down for her irresistible blood. The game is on and James will not stop until she is killed.

Bella Swan is a clumsy, kind hearted teenager with a knack for getting into trouble. Edward Cullen is an intelligent, good looking vampire who is trying to hide his secret. Against all odds, the two fall in love but will a pack of blood thirsty trackers and the disapproval of their family and friends separate them?

But the cool thing about it is that there are alternatives. For example this site. Instead of posting on some other forum site were very few are religious and talk only about things that should not be talked about especially on Saturday, well, you have this Club Adventist site as an alternative which is a really good comeback against the enemy.

HEY COSMIN

some have jobs so they can not post
all the time... then some come in
and post then go out for a time....
then others post all the time.....

that might be some of the reason
that people seem not to post

then there is the time zones and other
countries to think about

My sister loves Twilight.. I saw the move and thought it was rather boring. That said, I've always wondered why Adventists are so anti certain books/movies, like harry potter and anything to do with magic. I've never seen or read harry potter, because i personally think its boring, but I don't think "satanic" is how I would describe it. I see them simply as fictional tales, no different to any other unrealistic made up story.

HEY COULSTY

ALL though the old and new testaments it talks
about how GOD'S people are to have nothing to do with
witches or wizards or witchcraft

maybe that is the reason we are not to read or watch
HARRY POTTER or any other things dealing with this
issue

So how come dgrimm walt disney movies were always OK to watch. I think its almost like drinking coke. We are always told not to drink coke because of the caffeine, but yet pepsi, mountian dew, dr pepper, jolt and others are OK, yet they have more caffeine than coke. So what gives dgrimm?

HEY PKRAUSE

I did not know we were talking about
Walt Disney movies but we have to be careful.
there are some Disney movies that are good and
some are that are not worth watching. I guess
we have to be selective there.... just because
it is in cartoon does not make it right and
worth watching

and I would compare some Disney movies to diet coke
we think we are doing better but we are still fooling
ourself's.....

I have been surprised at the adults that are gaga over Harry Potter.

Any fiction makes a reader live in a fake world while they are reading/seeing it. We tell our kids about the wicked witch of Hansel and Grettel and other wicked characters. What about Star Wars etc.

We should feed our impressionable kids with true stories and direction in how to understand tales and parables and fiction.

I don't really know much about the Twilight series, but Harry Potter and the Star Wars movies are all about good versus evil. Ultimately Harry Potter has to sacrifice himself for the good of all--so that evil will not prevail; he miraculously recovers and good triumphs over evil. In the Star Wars saga there is much the same sort of story. Good versus evil; boy goes from being to good to evil--in the end, he changes his heart out of love and returns to being good again--while another good had to be willing to sacrifice himself so that good would prevail.

As for parables...well, didn't Jesus use parables? Didn't He also use a "fictional" place when He spoke of Lazarus and the rich man?

I agree that we do need to educate our children in how to understand tales, parables and fiction; but I disagree that we need only allow them non-fiction reading materials.
