I've always hated the way they do business. Those do it yourself refills don't seem to work either. It's like if the oil companies sold cars, they would be free, and gas would cost $300 a gallon.

Then be clever.

Buy a printer, and use it till the ink/toner's empty.

Then buy a new one and sell the old one off at half-price (or quarter-price).

Unfortunately this will not be ecologically-friendly.

My wife and I have recently bought a Samsung laser printer, for her nursery school as she need to print out pictures and themes for the children to do.

I noticed that the new toner almost is the same price as the printer, if not cheaper by a few Rands.

The problem with that is many printers simply will stop working until you replace the cartridge. I don't know of a workaround.

5+ years ago, I bought an HP color laser printer for $2k. I am afraid to add up what I have paid for toner cartridges over the years... way more than the purchase price (at $130 a pop minimum).

I was talking to a Sharp business equipment dealer here, and he states that the newer multifunction units by Sharp are now printing color sheets for around 7-8 cents per copy. That still adds up when you crank out 50-100 copies at a time.

Yea there really is no way around it. The printer has you by the gonads. hahaha I think that the companies make there money with the ink and not the printer itself.

I use a laser printer, and after I have done about 600 copies I take the cartridge out, give it a good side to side shake, and it is good for another hundred. I repeat that, shaking it every 100 copies, until, near the end, I only print a few copies without a shake. By that time I consider the cartridge empty, and take it to Cartridge World for a refill, at a saving of around $40.

I also take the empty cartridges from my colour Inkjet, and make an equivalent saving.

I shake the printer cartridges on my machine as well, and get a lot of extra printing out of them that way too, the same way that Beryl does!

You use a laser printer also? Do you print in b&w or color? Or do you actually do that with ink jet cartridges? I usually just wait till the printer will actually not print anymore with the ink cartridge or if the pictures I print come out craping looking.

I use ink jet cartridges for my printer - it prints in both b/w and in color. Shaking those cartridges really does work.

What brand printer and cartridges do you have and use?
